Collector’s Log #1: The PlayStation Journey Continues

NOTE: Collector’s Log entries will add some context to photos of recent pickups and additions to my library. I may also do some Collector’s Log Rewind entries as time goes on to talk about games picked up before the relaunch of Pete’s Perspective. And now, on to Collector’s Log #1!

It’s been a little bit since I got games for the original PlayStation that weren’t upgrades, so this recent arrival from the fine folks at Lukie Games breaks that little streak. Let’s talk about these grabs:

Casper is a game that I’ve weirdly avoided up until now. Perhaps it’s because reviews and impressions I’ve read have been pretty mixed, or maybe it’s because the copies that I’ve seen in the wild have been in pretty bad shape. I honestly haven’t seen the source material either, so there’s that. In any event, this is a new game to me. I’ll be on the lookout for the black-label variant, but I’ll be honest: It’s probably not a priority.

LEGO Island 2: The Brickster’s Revenge is a game that’s been on my want list since (repeatedly) watching this Caddicarus video about LEGO games. I’ve rarely seen it in the wild around my area, and my usual stops for online retro gaming retail haven’t had it— until now. I don’t have a lot of gameplay history with LEGO games before LEGO Star Wars on the PlayStation 2, so I have some catching up to do. When I get a chance to check the game out for myself, it’ll be my very first time playing it. We’ll see how that goes.

My only experience with any Populous games is a short time checking out the Super NES game what seems like eons ago. I’m not typically into “God” games or “sim” games, but I’m curious about Populous: The Beginning. I’m still on the lookout for another Bullfrog game, Magic Carpet, but the prices have been a bit of a turnoff. For now, this will have to do. As with the previous couple of games, this one is new to me, so playing it some 27 years late will be… interesting.

Finally, we’ve got NFL Xtreme. This is the only “upgrade” of the set, and it’s on-brand for me as one of the few people who loves older sports games. Resellers love me, because I’m the one guy they can get rid of their unwanted sports games to. Anyway… this is an NFL Blitz-inspired game from Sony’s 989 Studios. Unlike Midway’s games, though, 989 tries to cram its NFL GameDay engine into an arcade sports game, instead of building an arcade game from the ground up. This leads to mixed results, skewing below average in my view. Is it bad? No. It’s got a Blitz attitude, and it’s certainly playable. But… playing this just makes me want to play the real NFL Blitz instead.

With that, the first Collector’s Log is in the books. As I add more games to my library, I’ll share them— and my thoughts about them— here.
